Hydroponics, Hermit Crabs and “The Hole”

Today, we started with a tour of the Blue Harbor Tropical Arboretum to learn about hydroponics and tour the trees and flowers the farm contains. Their greenhouses hold over 80,000 heads of lettuce and had a wide variety of trees from all over the world. We were given seeds from a Mata Sabor that made everything taste sweet. So then we were given under ripened limes and they tasted sweet.

Lettuce from seed to table in six weeks
After our tour we took the bus to Coxen Hole, and saw how the locals in Roatan live. We were shocked to see how simply the locals live and were grateful for how much we have in the US. At Coxen Hole, we visited Yaba Ding Ding and a grocery store, where we bought local foods and some souvenirs.

The salad we had for lunch at AKR was harvested this AM!

We then took a ride over to Mangrove Bight where we went on an intertidal walk. We found some really awesome marine organisms such as brittle stars, hermit crabs, sea urchins and a chain moray eel. When we got back to the resort, some of the group took a hike through Carambola Gardens to the top of a mountain. Now we are looking forward to the island barbeque and fire dancing that will take place later tonight.

We are missing our families and friends, but are having an amazing time. We’ll see you soon.   Love Molly and Jade

Can you believe it? Who thought limes could taste sweet?

Mom! Look what I found....

We found lots of inverts too!

A "Serpent" or brittle seastar

So cool!

Tooth extraction? Wasn't painless!

Time to release the inverts back into their appropriate habitat.

  1. Hello MBC! I was afraid the weather was going to keep you from doing fun things today, but it looks like you found some neat creatures to hang out with for awhile.

  6. This all looks so awesome. I wish I could hold those animals. Plus I'm real jealous that I can't try any of the strange local fruits, it's kinda a practice of mine to try every weird fruit I can find. I hope you're all taking advantage of this whole thing. Can't wait till you're home safe and I can hear all the cool and funny stories you have Beth.
    I love you,
    Cody

  8. Hi Ian;
I read your email. So happy you are having fun. Check the posts, both your Dad and I have been commenting on the posts and leaving messages for you. Comment back to us. Did you see the post from House wondering how it was possible that you and Sammi are on the trip and no one got hurt, lol. I miss you but I am so happy you are having a great time. Did you win the dance contest?

  12. Beth, as Papa and I were walking home from last night's entertainment, we were wondering if you were enjoying the awesome full moon over the Caribbean that we were enjoying here in Tucson. It is wonderful that you are learning so much about the zoology, botany, and culture of this Caribbean island. Each island has its own unique qualities. We hope that the barbecue and fire dance was fun and that you are able to enjoy these last few days with good weather. Please remember to take lots of pictures to share with your family and friends back home. We love you. Grandma Connie and Papa Rob :-)

  13. Hey everyone, it's me KYLE :D,
Beth-Hope you're having fun, I know Cody is missing you deeply and so is everyone else for sure!
Ian-DUDE. The studio was so quiet without you! But really, I miss ya man, I really do. Live it up and of course YOLO!
Jade-Zak is lost without you and admittedly I am pretty sad, because you are truly a little sister to me as well. We have a bunch of interesting tales to tell you for sure so get back soon.
Batman-Get back SOON. I can't watch Supernatural alone, its weird if I'm by myself saying "He's gunna die." just weird.
Vern-My goodness, math and econ has been oddly empty without you to my left. Have fun and don't break any bones or anything.
Those who I didn't mention-Enjoy every second of your trip, I know I did. Laugh a lot and enjoy being with friends!

  14. Ian, you are stupider than Jupiter. But I miss you man.

Beth, softball is pretty pointless without the world's best catcher. Seriously. And there's no one to punch me when I lose the game. (hehehe)

Sammi, I found an old youtube video of jazz band. My god. There is no one to cringe from embarrassment with. (so much baby fat) And softball just isn't the same. Come back soon!

Jade, your brother is really really really sad without you. It's actually a little scary. Also being the only girl in studio sucks. And you took the storyboards with you.

Katie, you left and took my only source of common sense with you! Come back!

Vern, Carly and I are beside ourselves. And everyone knows it's a bad idea to leave the two of us alone.

Shannon, so guess what? WE AREN'T DOING A JOHN WILLIAMS PIECE. AND I HAVE NO ONE TO RAGE WITH. COME BACK SHANNON. COME BACK.

Last but not least, Molly. Gurl. I have no idea what the heck I am doing without you. There's no one to tell me to go to sleep when I start singing. And we all know that's a really really bad thing. And school is just. Awful. It's awful Molly. I miss your sarcasm. My god. I don't have anyone to yell through the hallways with. I just look like a weirdo (which we all know I am, but at least you were a weirdo with me.) I have so much stuff to tell you. Like. I might just blurt it out to the first person I see, that's how much stuff I have to tell you. I miss you like cray gurl. Come home soon!

  15. Sammi and MCB crew,
It is so exciting everyday to see the new pictures posted and what new adventures you have all been experiencing. I can't even begin to imagine all the stories we will be hearing about your time in Roatan. It is also so nice to see so many people commenting on the blog...that is a sure sign that many people love and miss you all! I'm a little nervous about seeing you with the ankle brace on Sammi but I am hoping it is a preventative measure and not a reaction to an injury...haha. Keep taking pictures...although I'm sure your time in Roatan will forever be etched in your memory. We love and you can't wait til Saturday night to see you again. Make the most of your last few days there. Love you much Sammi...Mom and Dad :)

  16. Hi everyone. The goodtimes continue. I'm glad you got a chance to see how the locals live. We truly are blessed in the US. Continue to enjoy your time (by the time you read this you will only have one more full day!). Love you Katie. Give yourself a hug and one to your buddy and G and K as well. Mom

  19. Katie, you all are obviously having unforgetable experiences and meeting up with some unusual creatures, flora and fauna. Bet Uncle Karl would have loved the boat ride in rough seas. I would not. But to cavort with dolphins, that I would give a lot for. So hope you have some pictures of you doing just that soI can enjoy it vicariously.

Enjoy the rest of your journey..Look forward to catching up on Sunday. Say Hi to the Doles.

    Love, Grammy

  20. Hi Becca, I'm so amazed by everything that all of you are doing in such a short time. This trip will be etched in your mind forever. I'm so happy that you will be coming home soon but sad for all of you to come home to this cold & still snowy weather. I hope that you guys didn't conveniently spend that departure tax money so they will keep you there...hahahahaha!!!! The island bbq & fire dance sounded like it would be a blast!!! Can't wait to hear all about it when you get back. Say Hi! to Beth & Jade for me. We Love & Miss You! Mom & Al XOXOXO PS. Lily is still driving us crazy & has been sleeping with us everynight. I don't know what we are going to do when you go to college. :(

    Love,

P.S. I just realized something, your nickname is rainbow fish, and you are swimming with rainbow fishes! Hahaha... wow that just proves how lost I am without you! :/

  23. Jade - I miss you so much. Without you here I realize that we do so much together. I has been pretty hard adjusting to life without my best friend. Just the other day I went to Mcdonald's and felt so empty. I'm really glad you're having so much fun! When you get back we can finally watch season 3 of The Carl Show.

Becca - I miss you just as much! Its so weird not talking to you and I have so much to tell you when you get back. It does make me happy to know you're on such an awesome trip though. I hope the rest of the trip is great and I can't wait to see you when you get back.

Ian - Math was decidedly better without you, no big surprise. The studio was much less productive however. Have fun, tacos when you get back of course.

Beth - It was odd without seeing you in math! I was all alone in the corner with Dylan, it was spooky. I hope you roll a 20 on fun, see ya soon!

  24. David I hope you had a good time at the barbeque & enjoyed the fire dancing. I also hope you did not try the fire dancing! Haha. I'm at grandmas watching the hockey game and everyone says hi. I liked the pictures of you finding the creatures of Roatan. I am noticing that you don't look very tan for all that hot weather, however, looks can be deceiving. I'm still waiting impatiently for your turn to blog but I did enjoy your reply to me. I see your camera in your hand & I hope you are taking many pictures. I also hope the underwater camera worked for you. I can't wait to see you. Enjoy the rest of your time because it's almost up! Ryan still misses you!

    Love,
    Mom & Ryan
